Taylor happy to be wrong over Darius

GRAHAM TAYLOR has backtracked, and admitted Sven Goran Eriksson was right to call up Darius Vassell, after the substitute scored the vital opening goal in England's 2-0 triumph over Turkey.

The Aston Villa boss had expressed his concern that his young forward had been called up to the squad for the Euro 2004 qualifiers with Liechtenstein and the Turks, suggesting he would be better suited by remaining with the Midlanders.

However, Vassell was to play a key part in the Stadium of Light success.

"He's not played too often and he has adapted," revealed Taylor.

"I was concerned he would be away for a fortnight and not participate in any of the games, and having Darius here for a fortnight would be better.

"But that was not the case, he's come on and scored an important goal, and I'm just as pleased as he is."

As for Alpay Ozalan's prospects of breaking into the Villa side, they look bleak despite the centre back registering a solid performance for his country on Wednesday.

"I've said before with Ronny (Johnsen) and Olly (Mellberg), we've a very good partnership, and I am not looking to break that partnership up," added Taylor.

"It's nothing against Alpay, and not just him, as we've also got Rob Edwards, who won his first Welsh cap recently.

"To compare Alpay's performance for Turkey with playing week-in, week-out in The Premiership, you just can't make a fair comparison. It's not fair to him either."
