Berson's switch in doubt

Mathieu Berson's move to Auxerre could be in doubt after the sacking of Jaques Santini.

Mathieu Berson's £1 million switch to Auxerre could be in doubt following the sacking of Jacques Santini by the French club.

Berson spent last season on loan at the Stade Abbe-Deschamps and Santini was keen to sign the young Frenchman on a permanent deal.

Having failed to settle in England, Villa are keen to offload the midfielder in the summer to raise funds to sign James Milner permanently.

However, following the Santini's sacking last week, the player's agent Olivier Jouanneaux admits the switch is clouded in mystery.

"We do not know what will happen now with Auxerre. It depends on the new manager and what he wants to do because Mathieu is on a good salary," said Jouanneaux.

"We know Aston Villa would like to sell him but we have had no news from them about that.

"For the moment we do not know what is happening. Nobody is telling us anything. It is not an easy situation. But if he has to go back to Aston Villa, then he will."

Meanwhile, Doug Ellis has revealed the club may not pursue their interest in Norwegian Eirik Bakke.

Bakke spent the first half of last term on loan at Villa Park from Leeds United but has struggled to earn a starting spot since his return to Elland Road.

"He can't even get into the Leeds side on a regular basis. That's my answer to that," he said.
