Petrov tipped to shine

Martin O'Neill has backed Stilian Petrov to be a huge success at Aston Villa.

Martin O'Neill has backed Stilian Petrov to be a huge success at Aston Villa.

The Bulgarian midfielder made the move to Villa Park from Celtic at the back end of the transfer window and was paraded before the media on Friday.

Petrov is likely to get a chance to impress against West Ham and O'Neill is expecting him to adapt to the pace of The Premiership.

"I think he will adjust, I think he is a good player and good players can adjust to any situation they find themselves in," said O'Neill on Sky Sports News.

"I am not saying he will be an instant success and score a hat-trick in his first game, and he might misplace a few passes, but overall he will be good.

"He is a terrific acquisition for us and I am convinced in time he will do The Premiership proud."

Petrov's arrival has increased the competition for midfield places at Villa Park and Steven Davis is ready to take up the challenge.

"If the club is going to move forward with new owners coming in, you expect competition for places and Petrov has done well at Celtic," said Davis.

"That competition for places can only be good for the club. It keeps everyone on their toes."
