Stuart Taylor has warned loan signing Scott Carson that he has no intention of relinquishing his place in Aston Villa's goal.
The former Arsenal trainee was given a rare opportunity to impress at the weekend against Liverpool, courtesy of Thomas Sorensen's injury, and he did not disappoint with an assured performance.
Although Taylor eventually found himself on the losing side, he was arguably the pick of Martin O'Neill's line-up, as he produced several excellent saves.
It is expected Carson will be Villa's first choice this season but Taylor has vowed to fight O'Neill's latest signing tooth and nail, to keep hold of a spot he has long since coveted.
Uncertain future
"Who knows what's going to happen now? There's me, Thomas and Scott Carson here now and I don't know what's going to happen," Taylor told the club's official website.
"The manager has decided to bring Scott Carson in, because of the injury to Thomas, but I played on Saturday and I'd like to play next week.
"I'm in the football business to play football. I don't want to sit on the bench and I'd like to play next week at Newcastle.
"But obviously it's the manager's choice and I respect that. I've just got to get my head down and keep working.
"It's a hard job being a sub goalie. It's hard waiting for your chance to come along and not knowing if you'll play at all.
"I was happy with my performance. Playing against a team like that, you expect to be busy."
Confident display
"I felt I made some decent saves and I was happy with my game, but the luck wasn't on our side," he continued. "That's football.
"Maybe if I hadn't played so much in pre-season I wouldn't have been as sharp as I was against Liverpool."
Villa's next game pits them against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday.
