Carr worry for Magpies

Injured Newcastle defender Stephen Carr looks set to miss the rest of the season.

Injured Newcastle defender Stephen Carr looks set to miss the rest of the season.

The full back has been struggling with a knee problem for some time after picking up the injury against Manchester United in November.

Newcastle hoped Carr would make his return to action this month, but the player has been unable to shake off the injury.

It is feared that Carr may need to undergo an operation in America to clear the problem up.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness is hopeful that the injury is not career threatening, but is resigned to being without the Republic of Ireland international until next season.

"I don't think it is career threatening but my feeling is we will need to operate on Stephen and it is a serious enough operation to keep him out of action for the rest of the season," said Souness.

"Hopefully we can get him back onto the pitch in August.

"Players must feel confident with what the medical people say, but we will accommodate him if he feels a visit to Dr Richard Steadman is what is required.

"It's desperately bad news for Stephen, but we just hope the operation does the trick.

"We've been blighted by injuries this season and this is a blow for Stephen."
