Bluebirds bag duo

Cardiff have completed the double signing of Michael Chopra and Stephen McPhail.

Cardiff have completed the double signing of Michael Chopra and Stephen McPhail.

Chopra turned down a new deal at Newcastle earlier this month and Cardiff have beaten off a host of rivals to sign him.

Cardiff have agreed a compensation package of £500,000 with Newcastle for Chopra as he is aged under 24.

McPhail rejected a new deal at Barnsley earlier this week despite helping the club win promotion to The Championship last term.

The Republic of Ireland international has penned a three-year deal at the Welsh outfit.

Bluebirds chairman Sam Hammam was delighted to sign the duo for next season.

"We've had to fight off seven other clubs to sign Chopra," said Hammam.

"Newcastle wanted him to stay and offered a new contract, but even they had to concede he wanted to play for Cardiff City.

"Stephen McPhail has skill on the ball and he'll certainly have a serious impact for us next season."
