Pearce's Bosvelt surprise

Stuart Pearce was surprised to learn Paul Bosvelt had agreed a move to Heerenveen.

Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce has admitted he was surprised to learn midfielder Paul Bosvelt had agreed a pre-contract with Heerenveen.

Heerenveen announced on their website last week that a deal had been struck to bring Bosvelt back to the Netherlands next term, with the development coming totally out of the blue for the City chief.

Pearce concedes Bosvelt was free to talk to other clubs, but had hoped to speak with the midfielder about extending his stay at Eastlands.

"I didn't know anything about Paul's move," said Pearce. "He is free to talk to other clubs, but I spoke to him a few weeks ago and said I couldn't make a decision on his future until my own position and the financial constraints I would be working under were clarified."

Bosvelt moved to City from Feyenoord in the summer of 2003 and has proved a consistent figure for the club this term.

The prospect of a short-term deal at City did not appeal to the 35-year-old and Heerenveen's two-year offer proved difficult to resist.
