Lazio coach snubbed Maccarone

Lazio coach Domenico Caso rejected the chance to sign Massimo Maccarone.

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has confessed that he had agreed terms to bring in Massimo Maccarone from Middlesbrough, but his coach vetoed the move.

Maccarone completed a loan move from Middlesbrough to Parma - on transfer deadline day - where he will play once more under the tutelage of Silvio Baldini.

However, it appears that Lazio coach Domenico Caso decided that he did not want to compete for the services of the player.

"I had agreed a deal for Maccarone," Lotito told Italian radio.

"But Caso decided against following it up."

Baldini believes that Lazio's loss is Parma's gain, and hopes the player can become the surprise star of Serie A this year.

"Let's forget his foreign experience," asserted Baldini. "I can only say that he is a great player and has everything he needs to do this job.

"He has the technical gifts to be one of the biggest and with Parma he will start to show that.

"Maccarone is one of the best young Italian forwards and he is now back with former team-mates and a way of working he is familiar with.

"He could be the surprise of the championship and I am sure he will be."
