Robins nearing Fontaine deal

Bristol City remain in negotiations with Fulham regarding defender Liam Fontaine.

Bristol City remain in negotiations with Premiership side Fulham regarding defender Liam Fontaine.

The West Country club have yet to agree a fee with The Cottagers for the player, who has concurred on personal terms with The Robins.

The Ashton Gate club are keen to secure Fontaine's services by next week, with League One rivals Crewe Alexandra having agreed a fee with Fulham for Fontaine.

Despite Dario Gradi's interest, the Railwaymen boss has conceded that Gary Johnson's side are in pole position to sign Fontaine.

"We have agreed personal terms with Liam, but are still in negotiations with Fulham about compensation," Robins chairman Steve Lansdown told City's official website.

"We hope to conclude the deal next week."

Fontaine spent the latter half of last season on loan with City, having played for Johnson twice on loan at his former club Yeovil Town.

Should Fontaine arrive at City next week, it will be the second time this close season that The Robins have pipped Crewe to a new player after landing centre back Jamie McCombe from Lincoln City.

Gradi, meanwhile, is hoping to take the Morecambe duo of centre back Darran Kempson and goalkeeper Steve Davies on trial this summer.

The Crewe manager hopes to take the pair on their pre-season trip to Portugal later in the summer.
