Filan slams Gills approach

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper John Filan has lashed out at Gillingham's tactics.

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper John Filan has lashed out at the Gillingham tactics he feels could have caused him serious injury.

Filan was unhappy with the roughhouse style employed by The Gills during their surprise 2-1 victory over the Championship table-toppers on Saturday.

The Australian shot-stopper was bundled into the back of the net during the first half at The Priestfield Stadium by Gills striker Darius Henderson.

The challenge prompted a furious reaction from Filan, who was booked for grabbing Henderson by the throat as a scuffle in the goalmouth ensued.

But Filan has hit out at Henderson for the tackle and also the instructions meted out to Gillingham's forwards by manager Stan Ternent.

"Football gets a bit dangerous when you jump for the ball and the forward makes no attempt to go for it," said Filan.

"He just took my legs away.

"I was angry as I've seen keepers land on the back of their heads in situations like that.

"I'm sure their front two were under orders to do that. They did exactly the same at our place. It's their tactics."
