Jewell reveals Pollitt pain

Wigan boss Paul Jewell says it was a tough decision to drop in-form Mike Pollitt.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell says that dropping in-form goalkeeper Mike Pollitt was one of the hardest decisions he has had to make as a manager.

The former Rotherham man had been in impressive form as The Latics made a good start in their first five Premiership games of the season.

However, last year's number one John Filan was recalled after recovering from a hernia problem, and the Australian has now supplanted Pollitt in the starting line-up for the last two games.

Despite Jewell promising he would stick with Pollitt if he proved himself to be Premiership class, the Latics boss has now revealed it was a painful decision to go against his word and recall last season's hero.

"It was a tough decision to leave Mike out, one of the hardest I've ever had to make because he has been fantastic for us," said Jewell.

"I just felt it was the right time to bring John back in. Obviously, Polly wasn't best pleased and I understand that.

"What was difficult was Polly hadn't done anything wrong and I'd told him previously if he played well, he would stay in the side.

"I went against that. I don't know why. I just had a gut feeling it was the right thing to do.

"John has been fantastic for us, and so has Polly.

"I've two great goalkeepers in competition for the shirt, and I think John will realise now he has to play very well to stay in the side."
