The England Under-21 international suffered the injury during the reserve team fixture with Newcastle United on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old had only recently returned from a broken foot, but Jewell has backed him to bounce back again.
"Ryan is an absolutely top lad, a real worker with a fabulous attitude to his game," the Wigan boss told the club's official website.
"I have absolutely no doubts in my mind that he will come back stronger and even more determined to succeed.
"I have seen enough this season to suggest he can have a long career in football and everyone at the club is devastated for him."
Taylor, who had scored in the reserve game, arrived at the club from Tranmere Rovers last year.
