Landzaat attracting Latics

Wigan Athletic look to have stepped up their interest in midfielder Denny Landzaat.

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell looks to have stepped up his interest in AZ Alkmaar midfielder Denny Landzaat.

According to reports in Holland, The Latics are thought to have launched a bid of around ‚é¼3.3 million (£2.3 million) for the former Ajax and Willem II man.

The news comes after Landzaat's agent, Sigi Lens, declared his client had agreed personal terms with Spanish club Espanyol, though the Barcelona-based outfit have yet to concur on a deal with AZ for the player.

Despite Espanyol's hopes to bring the 30-year-old to the Montjuic, Wigan are thought to have made a better offer for Landzaat, with a three-year contract reportedly offered to the midfielder by the Premiership club.

It remains to be seen if Landzaat, who has a year left on his AZ contract, would be attracted by a switch to The JJB Stadium, though he has intimated a desire to play abroad next season.

Jewell's search for new faces has already seen centre back Fitz Hall arrive from Crystal Palace, while Birmingham City have accepted a £5.5 million bid from The Latics for striker Emile Heskey.
