Paul Jewell has confirmed Wigan have entered a bid for Dutch midfielder Denny Landzaat.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell has confirmed to Sky Sports News that the Premiership side are waiting on news of a bid for Dutch World Cup midfielder Denny Landzaat, whilst revealing his summer recruitment drive is continuing full pelt after landing Chris Kirkland.After last season's surprise success The Latics are looking to reinforce their Premiership status with some star signings this summer, and AZ Alkmaar midfielder Landzaat features high on their wish-list.
Reports in Holland on Friday indicated that Wigan had tabled a £2.3 million for the man who made three substitute appearances in Germany, although Espanyol will be strong contenders for his signature should they agree a fee with the Eredivisie outfit.
Jewell has now confirmed Wigan's approach for the 30-year-old, revealing that The Latics are waiting on a response from their Dutch counterparts.
"Denny Landzaat is a player we have admired for a long time," Jewell told Sky Sports News.
"We have made Alkmaar an offer so we are waiting to hear from the football club."
After already recruiting Fitz Hall, Emile Heskey, Polish midfielder Tomasz Cywka and, on Tuesday, Kirkland, Jewell is still actively looking for further recruits, with a £1 million bid for defender Emmerson Boyce already rejected by Crystal Palace.
Jewell remained cautious over his interest in the Eagles man, stating he did not expect any further developments in the chase for the former Luton Town star.
"We've made an offer for Emmerson Boyce on Friday that was rejected, so unless things change that is the end of that," Jewell added.
Heskey's arrival from relegated Birmingham represented Wigan's record transfer outlay, but Jewell is still in the market for another striker.
Former charge Nathan Ellington looks unlikely to be a prime candidate as even though The Latics are interested in bringing him back to The JJB Stadium, West Brom have made clear they are unwilling to sell.
"I want to have four strikers, we've got David Connolly, Emile Heskey, Henri Camara so I want to bring another in.
"We've asked about Nathan but West Brom are reluctant to sell.
"I don't want to waste time and energy on something that's not going to happen.
"West Brom just don't want to sell their players, that's their prerogative."
After their comfortable Premiership finish and run to the Carling Cup final The Latics are hoping to take a further leap in class in the coming season, and Jewell is still hoping to see a number of new faces at The JJB Stadium next term - despite the difficulty in fighting for high profile names.
"It's been difficult this summer, we have made lots of offers, lots of enquiries, we've had a few knock backs.
"Obviously the likes of Fitz Hall, Chris Kirkland and Emile Heskey are great signings for us but I want to bring in at least four or five more players before the start of the season because the squad is thin on the ground.
"But if we can get four or five in I'll be quite excited about our team next season.
"You never know in this game, something might pop up that attracts us, we are in the market for good players, that won't change.
"We've found it difficult this year because we have gone up a level of player, and the level of player attracts a level of clubs as well so we are in competition with some top, top clubs to get players.
"We have found that difficult but that is what it is all about trying to establish ourselves, Wigan Athletic in The Premiership, and hopefully we can do that this year and next year it will be even easier to get players in."
