Jewell issues Denny warning

Paul Jewell has warned Denny Landzaat that he must step up and be counted.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell has warned Denny Landzaat that he must step up and be counted as the Dutch international struggles to acclimatise to English football.

When Wigan landed the World Cup performer from AZ Alkmaar in the summer it was seen as somewhat of a coup on their part, but as yet, the player has not delivered.

Such has been the schemer's lack of form, Jewell elected to relegate him to the substitutes' bench last weekend against Manchester City.

He is, though, likely to be given a reprieve against Fulham on Saturday as Josip Skoko is struggling with a torn hamstring and Jewell has urged his underperforming star to seize the opportunity with both hands.

"Denny is a quality international but hasn't settled in yet," said Jewell of the 30-year-old.

"I'm not going to hide behind that. Denny knows that and I'm sure he can only get better.

"But some players settle quicker than others. He's far better than he's shown."
