Taylor focused on future

Wigan defender Ryan Taylor is looking to put his year of injury torment behind him.

Ryan Taylor was thrilled with his goal against Newcastle and is looking to put his year of injury torment behind him.

Taylor's excellent free-kick handed Wigan all three points against Newcastle and went some way to proving his career is finally back on track.

A couple of serious injuries ensured 2006 was a year to forget for Taylor, but he is now looking forward to the rest of the season with relish.

"It was so special," he told Sky Sports News of his goal. "When I saw it go in it felt extra special.

"I had a bad injury against Newcastle and it felt that bit more special.

"The gaffer always tells me to look to score and aim for the back post and that's what I did."

Looking back on last season, Taylor added: "In my life 2006 never existed. It is a year I want to forget. 2007 has come and I am looking to kick on from here.

"Every time I step on that field a smile comes to my face as there were doubts when I was injured that I might not play again.

"But when I put the shirt on I give it my best shot."

Latics chief Paul Jewell was thrilled to see Taylor score, as he said: "He is a great kid, a good player. He was in and out the team last season.

"He broke his metatarsal and came back and broke his leg playing for the reserves against Newcastle, so to come back and score a great goal against Newcastle is great.

"He has worked ever so hard."
