Charlton v Birmingham preview

Paolo Di Canio could return to boost Charlton Athletic's push for a UEFA Champions League spot against fellow European hopefuls Birmingham City.

The Italian maestro missed Bank Holiday Monday's historic win at Liverpool through illness but is fit for Saturday's clash with Blues.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley must decide whether to restore Di Canio to the starting line-up or stick with the team which won 1-0 at Anfield.

Fellow forward Carlton Cole could come into the equation after a two-game rest while Graham Stuart is in contention after playing for the reserves in midweek following a back injury.

Mark Fish is also back in full training, along with Chris Perry, but fellow defenders Gary Rowett and Richard Rufus, along with Kevin Lisbie, are still unavailable.

The Addicks are currently just two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the race for the coveted Champions League berth and hold a one-point advantage over Saturday's visitors to The Valley.

Though Charlton's home form has not been strong this season, Blues have not won on their travels since they beat Leicester 2-0 in mid-December.

Steve Bruce's side have won just once in their last six matches but, remarkably, are still pressing for a place in Europe's elite club competition.

Bruce has selection concerns for the trip to the capital with Martin Grainger and Stan Lazaridis having been ruled out for the remainder of the season with knee and groin injuries respectively.

Darren Carter is missing with a hernia problem while David Dunn is unlikely to be risked after recovering from the hamstring injury which has sidelined him since the end of February.

Robbie Savage's fitness remains a worry for Bruce due to an ankle complaint, but the influential midfielder should play against Charlton.
