Danny Murphy believes an Englishman should eventually replace Sven Goran Eriksson.
Danny Murphy has added his weight to the chorus for an English manager to replace Sven Goran Eriksson as coach of the national team.The Charlton Athletic midfielder is knocking on the door for an England recall after an impressive start to the season.
Experienced tactician Eriksson was the man who handed Murphy his international debut against Sweden in late 2001.
Murphy is confident that The Football Association made the right decision in originally appointing Eriksson, as he feels the former Lazio coach was the best available.
But Murphy has thrown his weight behind the clamour for an Englishman to take charge of The Three Lions when Eriksson eventually leaves his post, with his club boss Alan Curbishley among the leading candidates.
"We always get carried away. I mean, it's not like we're Brazil or anything," Murphy told the Daily Telegraph.
"To be fair to Sven, he's lost one World Cup qualifier, plus those games to Brazil and Portugal.
"That's three matches. How many other England managers have got that kind of record?
"Having said that, I am a believer that the England team, sooner rather than later, should be managed by an Englishman.
"It would be contradictory for us to think we're one of the best footballing nations in the world and then continually employ foreign managers. I don't see the logic in that.
"I know Sven was the right choice at the time and he's proved that in many ways but I think there's enough quality within our system now to find a good enough English coach."
