Charlton boss Alan Curbishley remains confident that Luke Young will be fit to partake in this summer's World Cup.The Addicks stopper suffered an ankle injury against West Ham on April 2 and has had his leg in a protective cast ever since.
Initial reports had claimed that Young was out for the remainder of the campaign but Curbishley has now handed the player, and England, a boost.
Curbishley, who hopes to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson after the World Cup, is of the opinion that Young could be back playing within two weeks.
"I'm a bit put out by this story today and so is Luke,'' said Curbishley. ''He's been wearing a protective boot since he got the injury and he's been having treatment.
"We're pleased with his progress. He's seeing a specialist this afternoon and we're hopeful he won't be too far away.
"Talk he'll be out for four or five weeks, for the rest of the season or even for the World Cup is very premature - we think he's got a good chance of coming back before the end of the season.
"He had a similar injury before which responded to an injection and we may take the short cut of giving him the injection a little bit earlier this time.
"But we're fairly confident it's not as serious as it looked and hopefully he'll be back in a couple of weeks.
"Luke has had a fantastic season. His performances have put him right in the frame for the World cup squad.
"Sven knows he can play at left back so he gives England versatility. He will definitely be an adequate squad member for Germany so it would be a big disappointment if he misses out.''
