Curbs: Upson spell a disaster

Alan Curbishley admits Matthew Upson's time at West Ham United has been 'a disaster'.

Alan Curbishley admits Matthew Upson's time at West Ham United has been 'a disaster'.

The defender was a £6million signing from Birmingham City in January, but has yet to complete even 45 minutes of football.

He was forced out of his debut against Aston Villa after half-an-hour and lasted just 11 minutes of his comeback against Tottenham Hotspur.

Upson has been receiving treatment on his calf injury, but now appears unlikely to figure again for The Hammers this season.

West Ham boss Curbishley cursed the centre-half's misfortune and feels it is symptomatic of the club's injury problems this term.

"He has had another series of treatments and has not responded," said Curbishley in The Guardian.

"We are running out of time. It's difficult (for him) to return before end of season.

"It has just been a disaster.

"We seem to be in the same position - when players come back they have not played for a long while.

"We have taken gambles before and they have not quite worked."
