Championship round-up

Cardiff are top of the tree while Norwich, Colchester, Leicester & Wolves all won.

Cardiff City are top of The Championship after beating Birmingham City while Norwich, Colchester, Leicester, Coventry and Wolves all won.

Cardiff have moved top outright following a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Birmingham City at Ninian Park.

The Bluebirds had been behind Steve Bruce's charges based on alphabetical order at the start of the day, but the Welsh outfit are now three points clear of The Blues.

It did not take long for Dave Jones' side to take the lead with highly-rated Joe Ledley collecting Paul Parry's pass in the 12th minute before finding the back of the net.

Cardiff were close to doubling their advantage before the break only for City keeper Colin Doyle to deny Michael Chopra from close range.

The home side did clinch the points late on in the second half when Paul Parry hammered home past Doyle after 75 minutes.

Norwich have flattered to deceive this season but they put that ghost to rest with a 5-1 demolition of 10-man Barnsley.

The Tykes were up against it when Antony Kay was dismissed early on with Robert Earnshaw dispatching the ensuring spot-kick.

Carl Robinson doubled The Canaries' lead although the visitors threatened a comeback when Paul Hayes pulled a goal back.

However, it was one-way traffic after the interval with goals from Lee Croft, Darren Huckerby and Earnshaw's second sealing a 5-1 success.

Crystal Palace have lost ground on the Cardiff after being held at home by Burnley in a 2-2 draw.

Burnley twice led through Alan Mahon and Kyle Lafferty, although Leon Cort and James Scowcroft ensured the game finished level.

Southampton remain unbeaten after five games although they were held again, this time by Preston at St Mary's.

Things looked good when Grzegorz Rasiak found the back of the net before half-time, however a Kelvin Davis howler after the break allowed Simon Whaley's free-kick to equalise.

Plymouth have Barry Hayles to thank for a point after his late strike cancelled out Mamady Sidibe's opener for Stoke to secure a point for The Pilgrims.

Jemal Johnson netted minutes after half-time at Molineux to give Wolves a 1-0 success over Luton while Kevin Thornton's late goal gave Coventry the points at Hull City.

Patrick Kisnorbo bagged the only goal of the game after 40 minutes as Leicester City secured their second win of the campaign against Southend.

Colchester United's season has begun following a 4-3 victory over Derby County at Layer Road.

The U's were coasting at one stage at 4-1 up, although The Rams fought back but were unable to muster a leveller.

Jamie Cureton bagged a brace before Arturo Lupoli's first ensured a tight game at the interval.

Chris Iwelumo's penalty and Cureton's third appeared to have the points in the bag before late goals had the home support biting their nails.

Lupoli netted his second and the result was in doubt when Paul Peschisolido made it 4-3 although Derby failed to find a fourth that would have salvaged a point.
