Clemence: I considered leaving

Stephen Clemence has revealed he almost decided to leave Birmingham.

Stephen Clemence has revealed he almost decided to leave Birmingham earlier in the season.

Clemence struggled to establish himself in the Blues side during the first part of their Championship campaign and considered a move away from St Andrews.

However, he opted to stay and has become an integral part of Steve Bruce's plans.

"I spoke to the manager a few times about it," Clemence told the Birmingham Mail.

"Earlier in the season there probably was an opportunity to leave. It would have been a loan move with a view to a permanent move in this league.

"But I decided to stay and fight for my place. I get on fine with the manager - I've never had any arguments with him - but I want to play football.

"Thankfully I am at the moment."

Clemence is currently standing in as captain for Damien Johnson and relishing the challenge of trying to help Birmingham secure promotion.

"Before this season I had a couple of disappointing years, but it's really nice to be back involved now," he explained.

"In the last few years we've always been trying to avoid relegation, and I tell you now, it's a lot less pressure trying to win a league title than it is trying to avoid relegation.

"It's nice to be having a run in the side and I feel I'm back to where I was a couple of years ago."
