Sunderland striker Fabio Borini has been named in a 28-man Italy squad for a pre-Euro 2016 training camp.

Borini has won just one cap for his country, back in February 2012. He was involved in their squad at the European Championship later that summer but was never called upon to play.

The 25-year-old's form improved towards the end of the Premier League season, scoring two goals in his last five appearances as Sunderland avoided relegation.

His call is the first since Antonio Conte took over as Italy boss in 2014, but he still has plenty of hurdles to overcome if he is to be part of the final 23-man squad.

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna, who has 10 international caps, has also been recalled, and there is a place for Southampton's Graziano Pelle.

Conte has opted to name a big squad for the get together, but there are at least another eight regulars who are unavailable because of club duties with of Juventus, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, whose Matteo Darmian is preparing for the FA Cup final.

Juventus and Milan face one another in the Coppa Italia final on May 21, 10 days before Conte has to name his final squad for the tournament, meaning there is no place in the training squad for Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli among others.

The Azzurri play their first friendly against Scotland on May 29 and also face Finland on June 6 - their Euro 2016 campaign starts on June 13 against Belgium.
