McCarthy backs Brown

Mick McCarthy has underlined his faith in young striker Chris Brown.

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has underlined his faith in young striker Chris Brown after his brace in the Carling Cup against Crewe.

The Black Cats were edged out on penalties against Crewe on Tuesday, but Brown impressed with two goals.

It was a timely brace for Brown, who has just ended a club-imposed suspension for firing paint balls at members of the public from a car.

"I've got a lot of faith in Browny," said McCarthy. "I let him go out on loan to Doncaster last year and he did well out there.

"There's a whole clatter of clubs who'd like to take him on loan but that's not going to happen.

"He's had his problems over the last couple of weeks, it's been well documented and that's finished.

"I wanted to show faith in him and get him back in the side and he's repaid that faith."
