Welsh close to MLS move

Andy Welsh is set to embark on a career in North America after agreeing terms to join Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

Toronto are looking to build a side capable of competing in MLS, having become the first non-American side to be allowed into the league, and coach Mo Johnston approached Sunderland about their winger.

The Black Cats have agreed to terminate Welsh's contract and he is on his way to Toronto to undergo a medical, much to Johnston's delight.

"It was on and it was off, but Sunderland were great in allowing him to come over," Johnston told the Sunderland Echo.

"We're very happy in having a 23-year-old coming to join us."
