Black Cats in Baggies talks

Roy Keane has confirmed Sunderland are in talks with West Brom over Paul McShane.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane has confirmed the club are in talks with West Brom over Paul McShane.

Keane has held a long-term interest in his fellow Irishman and has been linked with him all summer.

The Black Cats boss knows all about McShane following their time together at Manchester United.

Keane has stepped up his interest in McShane after being frustrated in his attempts to sign Wigan's Leighton Baines.

Sunderland and West Brom are locked in talks over McShane and Keane is hopeful a deal can be done to bring the rugged defender to the Stadium of Light.

"We are in talks with West Brom and we hope something will be done over the next few days," said Keane.

"Paul's a player I know and a player I like. He's a good character.

"I keep saying we need a stronger squad and we need competition for places, and hopefully Paul can bring that.

"I don't really like talking about players who are under contract at other clubs, but I hope a deal can be done. But we'll have to see."
