Carlisle United hope to agree a deal to sign on-loan midfielder Paul Thirlwell on a permanent basis.

Thirlwell has just completed the first month of a three-month stint from Championship side Derby County.

The 27-year-old has impressed in his eight appearances for The Cumbrians after being told he has no future at Pride Park.

He could now secure a permanent contract with Carlisle after delighting manager Neil McDonald.

"I would love to have him," said McDonald.

"It all depends on whether he wants to stay here.

"I think he's enjoyed himself here and it's all down to what Paul and Derby want to do."
