Preston push past Stags

Preston reached the second round of the Carling Cup after beating Mansfield.

Preston finally reached the second round of the Carling Cup following a comfortable 4-0 win over Mansfield Town at Field Mill.

The game, which has been postponed on a couple of occasions, did not take long to come to life with Richard Cresswell opening the scoring after three minutes.

The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after under controversial circumstances. Their first free kick was charged down, however the block was deemed illegal and the chance was moved forward.

Graham Alexander made no mistake from the second effort by sending the ball past the helpless Kevin Pilkington from the edge of the penalty area.

Preston pressed home their advantage after the break with on-loan Hazard United striker Omar Daley netting his first goal in English football.

The rout was completed late on when Simon Lynch added a fourth although the win was marred by Eddie Lewis' dismissal for collecting two yellow cards.
