Preston aim for Nugent deal

Preston chairman Derek Shaw insists David Nugent will not be joining Rangers.

Preston North End chairman Derek Shaw insists David Nugent will not be joining Rangers and hopes to tie the striker down to a new deal.

Nugent was linked with a move to Ibrox after Walter Smith was spotted at Deepdale for Monday's Championship game with Southampton.

The Rangers boss played down the speculation and Preston have also confirmed the England Under 21 international has no plans to move to Scotland.

"He is very much a Preston player and loves it here," Shaw told the Daily Record. "There has been a lot of interest and a lot of media hype because of his quality.

"But we enjoy working with David and he is a fantastic lad. We only hope we can get to the Premiership and renew his contract in the summer.

"He only wants to play in the Premiership. He wants to see Preston in the Premiership, like we all do."

The 15-goal striker's current contract expires at the end of next season and Shaw confirmed tentative talks regarding an extension have already taken place.

He added: "We have already discussed the chances of a new contract and will revisit the situation at the end of the season.

"As you can imagine, a lot of people are watching him. But he loves being at Preston.

"He will make the right move if he is to leave. If we do miss out on a place in the Premiership this year we will all have to stop and look."
