Stags sign Posh defender

Mansfield Town have signed defender Gareth Jelleyman on a free transfer.

Mansfield Town have signed defender Gareth Jelleyman on a free transfer from League One club Peterborough United.

With Mark Arber returning to The Posh after leaving Oldham Athletic this week, Posh boss Barry Fry has allowed the 24-year-old (pictured) to move to Field Mill.

The left back started the season on loan with League Two rivals Boston United and the former Wales Under-21 international will finish the campaign in the same division with The Stags.

Caretaker manager Carlton Palmer is also looking to add a midfielder to his ranks after revealing his interest in Wolves midfielder Sammy Clingan.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international recently spent three months on loan with League One side Chesterfield and Palmer is keen to secure the services of the in-demand 21-year-old.

The news comes as midfielder Neil MacKenzie has turned his loan deal at League Two rivals Macclesfield Town into a permanent arrangement.

The 28-year-old joins The Silkmen for a nominal fee after initially moving to Moss Rose on a three-month loan deal back in November.

Meanwhile, the club have revealed that central defender David Artell suffered a health scare on Wednesday evening.

The former Rotherham United player needed to be rushed to hospital, where he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis.

Artell had been nursing an ankle injury when he made an earlier hospital visit to have stitches and an ankle cast replaced.

However, the defender soon complained of feeling faint and needed the assistance of his wife to return to hospital, where doctors told Artell he may have died of the deep thrombosis had he gone to bed.

The condition will now keep him sidelined for a further two months.
