Jay Bothroyd (pictured) grabbed a superb double but Wolves were pegged back by Palace before midfielder Mark Little was sent off for two fouls on Jobi McAnuff.
The dismissal ruined the game as a spectacle, with Wolves unable to throw men forward after the break and Palace lacking the guile to break down the 10 men.
But McCarthy was delighted with a determined display which keeps his side in the play-off places with three games remaining.
"That could turn out to be our most precious point of the season," he said.
"Results were kind to us again and it's a lovely position to be in with three games left. That point might just be the point which does it for us at the end.
"It was a good performance in the first half and a determined performance in the second half when we had to dig in."
Bothroyd had a trial at Palace over the summer but was turned down by manager Peter Taylor, allowing McCarthy to step in. The striker now has four goals in his last two games to reignite Wolves' promotion bid.
"I'm getting the best out of him and he's getting the best out of himself," added McCarthy.
The Wolves boss had no problems with the decision to dismiss Mark Little.
"I've got no complaints about the sending-off. If he's committed two fouls and been shown two yellows I can't argue with that, although it does seem some refs are too quick to send people off."
Taylor felt his side could not be faulted for effort despite treading water in mid-table following a disappointing season.
"I thought the players of both teams gave it everything today and you can't ask for much more than that," he said.
"It was a disappointing second half for both teams. We knew Wolves, after having a man sent off, would be hard to break down.
"We started well and scored a couple of good goals, although I thought we were a bit too pleased with the first one and switched off for the equaliser.
"Jobi McAnuff was terrific today, he was cream-crackered when he asked to be taken off but he did some exciting things and got their man sent off - not deliberately - but because his pace takes some holding."
