SAINTS SNAP UP KEEPER

SOUTHAMPTON have taken Terje Skjeldestad to The Dell on a trial basis in a bid to increase the competition on current number one Paul Jones.

Dave Jones has Neil Moss as back-up to his Welsh international keeper but he is searching for another shot-stopper and Sogndal youngster Skjeldestad fits the bill.

The Norwegian Under-21 international will play for the reserves against Crystal Palace on Tuesday and he is staying long enough with the club to also participate in the clash against Wimbledon`s second-string the following week.

The 21-year-old will be with The Saints until January 29 when manager Jones will have to take a decision on whether to sign him on a permanent basis.

Skjeldestad was an ever-present during the 1998 season, although he conceded 17 goals in the final three matches of the campaign as Sogndal collapsed spectacularly and were relegated from the top flight. However, a consolidatory term in the Norwegian First Division saw the club finish fifth in 1999.
