Saints trial Dutch defender

Southampton have handed a trial to PSV Eindhoven defender Michael Lamey.

Southampton have handed a trial to PSV Eindhoven defender Michael Lamey.

The defender has been informed he can head out of the Philips Stadion in January and has pitched up at St Mary's for a trial.

Lamey has failed to hold down a regular place under Guus Hiddink, although a hamstring injury in October did little for his cause, and he is looking to kick-start his career away from the Eredivisie.

Saints chief Harry Redknapp is desperate to bolster his squad in a bid to stave off relegation and it would appear as if he has used his contacts on the continent to bring in Lamey.

The transfer window is set to close in five days, meaning Lamey will have to make an instant impact if he is to win a move to the South Coast.

Voetbal International are suggesting that Redknapp has set a deadline of Saturday for Lamey to prove himself, as he will turn his attentions elsewhere if the 25-year-old fails to make the grade.

Lamey, who has made five appearances for PSV this term, arrived in Eindhoven in the summer of 2002 and has a deal which runs until 2007.
