Carling Cup round-up

Southend United dumped Leeds United out of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win.

Southend United spoilt the unveiling of Dennis Wise and Gustavo Poyet after dumping Leeds United out of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win.

Wise and Poyet were formally announced as the new Elland Road management team before Tuesday's third round kick-off, with Whites reserve team boss Dave Geddis in charge of the West Yorkshire club against The Shrimpers.

It did not change the fortunes of struggling Leeds, as Steve Tilson's side took the lead through a Steve Hammell (pictured) penalty on 34 minutes.

Things got worse for Leeds when Southend doubled their advantage two minutes later, as Gary Hooper's first-time shot beat Tony Warner after Matthew Kilgallon was dispossessed in the home side's box.

Ian Moore gave Leeds some life just before half time when he converted a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-1, but Hooper made sure the Essex side went through when he struck his second goal on 64 minutes.

With Leeds second from bottom in the Championship table, Wise and Poyet have their work cut out to turn things around.

League Two club Notts County joined Southend in the fourth round draw after an impressive 2-0 home win over Championship opponents Southampton.

Mike Edwards gave The Magpies the lead on 13 minutes, with the centre back turning home a cross from the right to delight the home crowd at Meadow Lane.

Jason Lee (44) made sure the Nottinghamshire club added The Saints to previous round scalps of Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough in the competition.

Another Championship side in Norwich City succumbed to a lower division club, as League One outfit Port Vale saw off The Canaries 3-2 on penalties after a goalless extra-time draw.

Jeff Smith was Vale's hero in the end, as his decisive spot kick in the penalty shoot-out brought celebrations at Vale Park.

Ten-man Wycombe Wanderers caused an upset of their own when they ousted League One side Doncaster Rovers 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 extra-time draw.

After a goalless first half at Adams Park, Jonathan Forte (65) gave Donny the lead before The Chairboys equalised through a Stefan Oakes free kick (71).

Oakes's night, however, ended three minutes later after he was shown a straight red card by referee Rob Styles for a late tackle on Doncaster's Brian Stock.

The match went to extra time and Donny took the lead on 97 minutes, as Graeme Lee headed home Stock's free kick from the left.

Jermaine Easter made sure there would be a penalty shoot-out when he converted Kevin Betsy's cross four minutes from the end to force penalties.

Wycombe's on-loan goalkeeper Ricardo Batista was the hero in the shoot-out, as he kept out spot kicks from James Coppinger, Sean McDaid and Stock to win the tie for Paul Lambert's side.
