Richard Garcia has admitted that the managerial situation at Colchester is affecting the players.United have yet to find a replacement for Phil Parkinson, who switched to Hull last month, and have insisted that they will take their time to ensure they get the right man in place.
Former player Geraint Williams has been named as caretaker manager and is in contention to take over full-time, but Garcia is frustrated by the club's lack of urgency.
With the clock ticking down to the start of the new season, striker Garcia has pleaded with the Colchester board to make an appointment quickly.
"We are running out of time. We really need the manager to be in place, whether that be George (Williams) or someone else," he told the East Anglian Daily Times.
"It's affecting the players just a little bit. Everyone wants to know who the boss is going to be so that he can prepare for the new season and bring in some new players."
Garcia believes that Colchester's squad is down to its bare bones, and warned that they would be in for a long, hard season in The Championship unless things changed.
"We have a small, small squad at the moment. Our strength last season was that we had a big squad, full of good players, which meant we could fight for promotion. But we don't have that at the moment," he sighed.
"The squad is looking very thin on the ground, in all positions. We really just have a starting XI, and not very much else."
