Halford seeks U's move

Colchester United defender Greg Halford has handed in a transfer request.

Colchester United have confirmed promising defender Greg Halford has handed in a transfer request.

The versatile performer has coveted Premiership interest in the past but had looked to be staying at Layer Road following the club's promotion last term.

Although capable of playing in a variety of positions, Halford has established himself as a consistent performer at right back, with U's boss Geraint Williams loath to lose his services.

As yet there has been no suggestion of an offer for the player but even if one is forthcoming, Williams insists he will hold out for the best possible price.

"Yes, it is true that Greg has handed in a transfer request to the club, but we are not looking for him to leave at this time," Williams told the club's official website.

"While a part of me understands why he has taken this step, there is a valuation for Greg - as there is with all the players - that will have to met before we even consider looking at the situation."

"We have made no secret of the fact that we are doing all we can to bring players in. So shipping them out is the last thing on my mind."
