Bees takes U's scalp

Barnet have sent Colchester United out of the FA Cup after a 2-1 home victory.

Barnet have brought Championship high-flyers Colchester United back down to earth with a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup third round.

Jamie Cureton had given The U's a deserved half-time lead at the Underhill Stadium, but second-half strikes from Ismail Yakubu and Jason Puncheon saw the League Two club reach round four for the first time in their history.

The visitors looked the more accomplished side before the break, with Cureton finding the bottom corner of Lee Harrison's goal ten minutes before the break.

Richard Garcia then missed a great chance to double Colchester's lead moments later, and Harrison then needed to save from Kemal Izzet to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Despite being a goal behind, The Bees were a different side in the second half, and after manager Paul Fairclough had brought on Liam Hatch, the home side pulled level on 62 minutes.

Yakubu latched on to a through ball before seeing his shot deflect over U's goalkeeper Dean Gerken for 1-1.

It sparked Barnet into life, and they went on to claim the winner with ten minutes remaining through a fine left-footed turn and shot from Puncheon (pictured).

The result means Barnet will host either League Two rivals Peterborough United or Championship club Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round.
