Robins and Tykes chase Hayter

Bristol City and Barnsley are believed to be leading the race to sign James Hayter.

Bristol City and Barnsley are believed to be leading the race to sign James Hayter.

The Bournemouth striker will be a free agent in the summer, and his name was circulated to clubs throughout the Football League as The Cherries look to cash in on his remaining contract.

QPR had been thought to be keen on signing Hayter, although it is unclear as to whether or not they would be able to afford the £150,000 fee Bournemouth are thought to want for the 26-year-old.

Plymouth were another club linked with the Isle of Wight-born marksman, but look unlikely to make a move, while Swansea's reported interest will have cooled after they signed Brighton's Leon Knight on Thursday.

Hayter burst to national prominence in February 2000 when he set the record for the fastest hat-trick in league history, bagging three in under three minutes after coming on as a substitute against Wrexham.

Subsequently he has proven that the feat was no flash in the pan, notching 88 goals in his 277 league starts to date.

Bournemouth chairman Peter Phillips has confirmed that he has received two enquiries about Hayter, although he declined to reveal the identities of the clubs involved.

Meanwhile, Barnsley's Australian goalkeeper David Scarsella has joined non-league side Tooting & Mitcham United on loan for the rest of the season.
