Tykes trial Richards

Barnsley have handed a trial to former Northampton Town striker Marc Richards.

Barnsley have handed a trial to former Northampton Town striker Marc Richards.

The 23-year-old has been looking for pastures new after leaving The Cobblers at the end of last season.

The former Blackburn Rovers trainee had been training with League Two side Bristol Rovers this summer but opted against signing a deal with the West Country outfit.

The Wolverhampton-born player will now hope to impress Tykes boss Andy Ritchie, who he played with during a loan spell at Oldham Athletic.

The Oakwell club, meanwhile, have extended the contract of young goalkeeper Scott Flinders.

The 19-year-old will remain with the South Yorkshire club until the summer of 2008, having earned England Under-20 honours over the summer.

Flinders made 11 appearances for the League One club last term but has yet to feature for Ritchie's side this season, with Nick Colgan currently the Barnsley number one.
