Shrimpers Hayes bid rebuffed

Barnsley have rejected an offer from Southend for striker Paul Hayes.

Barnsley have rejected an offer from Southend for striker Paul Hayes.

The striker has made great strides since making the move to Oakwell from Scunthorpe last summer and he has caught the eye of Southend.

Southend boss Steve Tilson is keen to add further quality to an already impressive front-line, but it would appear as if he will have to substantially up the ante if he is to land Hayes.

"We're not even considering their offer," said Tykes manager Andy Ritchie. "It's nowhere near our valuation of him and he will not be going anywhere.

"I value Paul highly and paid good money for him last summer. Southend's offer does not even match what we paid for him. I don't know where they're coming from.

"It would have to be a massively-improved substantial offer and even then we would try to keep him."
