Robins sign Ridley

Cheltenham have signed former Scunthorpe defender Lee Ridley.

Cheltenham have signed former Scunthorpe defender Lee Ridley.

The 25-year-old's contract at Glanford Park expired on 1st July and Robins boss John Ward moved to secure the services of the left-back on a three-year deal after agreeing a deal in principle at the end of last week.

Ridley could be set to make his debut in Friday's pre-season friendly at Bishop's Cleeve.

"I'm really pleased that Lee has now signed for us," Ward said. "The move was held up by our respective holidays but now that the details have been finalised I think it shows the commitment of both the club and the player that we have agreed a three-year contract.

"Lee is a young player who has made over 100 Football League appearances. He has played against us for Scunthorpe and we have seen him in action on a number of other occasions as well.

"I spoke to [Sheffield Wednesday manager] Brian Laws who was previously at Scunthorpe for many years and he gave Lee a very high recommendation. I am sure that this move will turn out to be a favourable one for everyone involved."

Meanwhile, Barnsley have ended their interest in Scunthorpe's Marcus Williams after their bid for the defender was turned down.

A statement from the Tykes said: "Barnsley FC can confirm that Scunthorpe United FC have turned down a bid from the Reds for full-back Marcus Williams.

"The two clubs valuation of the player is significantly different and the Reds have therefore withdrawn their interest."
