Prem interest in Barnett

Brian Stein has revealed several Premiership sides are chasing Luton's Leon Barnett.

Luton assistant manager Brian Stein has revealed several Premiership sides are chasing Leon Barnett.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fine season with Luton this season and he has been an ever-present for Mike Newell this term.

West Brom expressed an interest in the highly-rated defender earlier this month, but Stein admits a number of Premiership clubs are targeting Barnett.

"There is Premiership interest in Leon," said Stein. "But we know he is not yet ready to go to play at that level.

"We know how well he has developed and improved, though.

"We do not want to sell him, and we will make life very difficult for ourselves if we do."

Meanwhile, Stein has hit out at Luton's board for failing to tie down young forward Dean Morgan to a long-term contract.

Morgan is considering his future at Kenilworth Road with his current contract expiring in the summer.

Leeds have made a bid for Morgan and Stein feels the club have got it wrong in not sorting out the player's future earlier.

"There is no foresight," fumed Stein. "We want to keep Dean, but he is in a position where he is allowed to talk to other clubs, and it is up to him what he wants to do.

"It was a mistake to let his contract run down like this. Dean now knows a club has come in for him, and he can take as long as he wants to decide.

"We made them (the club hierarchy) aware of the position with Dean's contract.

"People think it is easy to get players in for free and nurture them, but it is hard work."
