Surgery for O'Connor

Crewe midfielder Michael O'Connor is to undergo a hernia operation.

Crewe midfielder Michael O'Connor is to undergo an operation on a hernia problem.

The young Irishman will have the surgery as soon as possible and is expected to be sidelined for the start of the new season.

"He is due to have an operation on a hernia which has been diagnosed," Dario Gradi told the club's official website.

"The specialist did not think he would need an operation at first but Michael has struggled to shake it off."

Eugen Bopp, meanwhile, is also injured but stands a better chance of being fit for the season opener on 11th August.

Bopp had physio from his mother in Germany last week and could now go on the pre-season tour of Portugal, even if he will not play.

"Eugen will not be fit for the pre-season tour but we are hopeful that he will still come to Portugal," explained Gradi.

"It will be good for him as well as everyone else, however he probably won't be able to join in with the football at that time."
