League One round-up

League One new boys Cheltenham were the opening day's big winners at Swansea.

League One new boys Cheltenham were the opening day's big winners as they adjusted to life at a higher tier in some style in beating Swansea 2-1 on their travels.

Swansea may be one of the favourites for promotion but had no real answer to The Robins after falling two goals behind courtesy of strikes from Kayode Odejayi and Grant McCann (pictured) in the 48th and 54th minutes respectively.

Diminutive Swans front man Leon Knight caused John Ward consternation in the 78th minute when he grabbed a consolation, albeit to no avail as Cheltenham held on.

Another promoted side that impressed were last term's League Two champions Carlisle, who had Paul Murray's 4th minute strike to thank for taking maximum spoils at home to fancied Doncaster.

Title favourites Nottingham Forest marked Colin Calderwood's regime at The City Ground with a win as Julian Bennett's strike on the 10th minute mark was enough to beat Bradford 1-0, who could have fallen to a greater defeat had Forest substitute Neil Harris not missed a penalty.

The grudge match at Prenton Park saw Ronnie Moore take the bragging rights as his new side Tranmere beat former employers Oldham 1-0, thanks to a first half header from Chris Greenacre.

Oldham's woes were compounded in the final stages when youngsters Chris Taylor and Neal Eardley were shown red cards for a professional foul and unsporting behaviour respectively.

Leyton Orient marked their return to the third tier of English football in a miserable fashion as they fell to a 3-0 defeat on their travels to Port Vale. Last season's top scorer Leon Constantine grabbed a double (43 & 72), with debutant Akpo Sodje netting Vale's third towards the end.

Chesterfield will be delighted with their exertions on a tough looking trip to the coast as they beat Bournemouth 3-0, with Derek Niven, Colin Larkin and Paul Shaw all etching their names on the scoresheet in the second period.

Leroy Rosenior's first game in charge at Griffin Park ended in a 1-0 win for Brentford over Blackpool, as Olafur-Ingi Skulason's strike with 15 minutes remaining was enough to secure three points.

Bristol City's Enoch Showunmi was the matchwinner against Scunthorpe after he grabbed another debut goal at Ashton Gate in the 69th minute. The Iron were reduced to ten-men late on when Steve Torpey saw red for violent conduct.

Gillingham's highly rated youngsters Matthew Jarvis (57) and Dean McDonald (67) made their mark against Huddersfield in a 2-1 victory at Priestfield, with Gary Taylor-Fletcher grabbing a consolation for Town.

Crewe had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Gresty Road as they shared the spoils with Northampton, despite twice leading. Ryan Lowe gave Crewe an early lead only for Scott McGleish to grab a leveller in the 12th minute. David Vaughan restored Crewe's lead seven minutes later before Andy Kirk capitalised on some slack defending just minutes before the interval.

Alex Revell proved Brighton's matchwinner at Rotherham as he netted in the 43rd minute, with Albion holding on despite having Dean Cox sent off on the stroke of half time.

A delayed kick-off at Millwall ended in a stalemate as Darren Byfield's debut goal in the 82nd minute gave the home side a point against Yeovil, who had earlier taken the lead through Wayne Gray - another player making his bow.
