League One round-up

Port Vale and Nottingham Forest lead the way in League One with three wins out of three.

Port Vale and Nottingham Forest lead the way in League One with three wins out of three.

Martin Foyle's Valiants top the table after Leon Constantine grabbed his third goal of the season to secure a 1-0 victory over in-form Cheltenham.

Both Cheltenham and Port Vale entered their clash at Whaddon Road with perfect defensive records from their first two games, so it was perhaps predictable that the result was decided by just one moment of magic from the prolific Constantine (55).

Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood made a winning return to Northampton, with a Chris Doig own goal (46) proving the difference between the sides.

Forest should have taken the lead within the opening five minutes, only for Jack Lester to miss the team's third penalty in as many matches.

The Cobblers contributed to their own downfall though, with Scott McGleish sent off for foul play after Doig's blunder.

Brighton almost joined Forest and Vale on nine points but had to make do with a draw after Chris Moore rescued a point for Brentford in a thrilling game at The Withdean Stadium.

A Dean Hammond penalty (10) and Gary Hart strike (13) had put The Seagulls 2-0 up early on, only for The Bees to rally through Kevin O'Connor (38) and Moore (90).

Chesterfield continued their impressive start to the season with a crushing 5-1 victory over Millwall at Saltergate, to increase the pressure on new Lions boss Nigel Spackman.

The Spireites made a flying start with early goals from Paul Hall (13), Wayne Allison (24) and Caleb Folan (32), and ruthlessly rammed home their advantage in the second half.

Hall (51) and Allison (65) grabbed their second each, before Kevin Braniff (72) restored a modicum of pride for Millwall.

Carlisle suffered their first defeat of the season at Yeovil, as goals from Chris Cohen (16) and Ishmael Welsh (42) propelled The Glovers to a 2-1 win.. Kevin Gall (23) got his name on the scoresheet for The Cumbrians.

At the bottom, Rotherham started to make inroads into their 10-point deduction with a narrow 1-0 victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Will Hoskins grabbed Rotherham's first goal of the season on 71 minutes to take The Millers to within seven points of The Seasiders, the only side in the division to lose their first three games.

Oldham moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 victory over highly fancied Swansea at Boundary Park, Maheta Molango (67) bagging the goal for The Latics

Crewe were twice pegged back by Scunthorpe at Glanford Park, and eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Luke Rodgers' penalty (30) fired Alexandra into the lead and David Vaughan also struck for the visitors (49), but Billy Sharp (39) and Andy Crosby (66) found the back of the net for the resilient Iron.

Leyton Orient beat Bournemouth 3-2 in a topsy-turvy game at The Matchroom Stadium.

The Cherries responded well to Gary Alexander's opener (28) and took the lead through James Hayter (57) and Stephen Cooke (62), but Lee Steele (67 and 90) proved to be the hero for Orient.

Bradford overcame Gillingham 4-2 at Valley Parade, despite falling two behind after early efforts from with Mark Bentley (6) and Michael Flynn (14).

Mark Bower (43) pulled one back for The Bantams, before Dean Windass (61 and 90) stole the plaudits and Jermaine Johnson (90) added some late gloss to the scoreline.

Huddersfield also hit back to beat Bristol City 2-1, with Luke Beckett (64) and Pawel Aboott (90) on target for The Terriers following Philip Jevons' opener (49)

Doncaster and Tranmere played out a goalless draw in the day's remaining game at Belle Vue.
