Kinnear offers Sonner hope

Nottingham Forest boss Joe Kinnear has thrown Danny Sonner a lifeline after missing out on Riccardo Scimeca.

Northern Ireland international Sonner is out of contract in the summer and has not been offered a new deal to stay at The City Ground.

But Kinnear has not completely ruled Sonner out of his plans for next season, if the midfielder fails to find a new club.

Kinnear will invite the 32-year-old for pre-season training if Sonner is unable to secure fresh pastures during the course of the summer.

The Forest boss had been keen to bring Scimeca back to The City Ground and may revert to Sonner if he cannot clinch any other signings.

Scimeca only left Forest last summer for Leicester City but he is quitting the relegated Premiership side to join West Bromwich Albion.

"I've met up with Danny and have told him that if nothing comes his way, I will reassess the situation when we report back for pre-season training," Kinnear told the club's website.

"I'm looking at a lot of options at the moment and I was a bit disappointed that we didn't have a better chance of getting Ricky Scimeca, who has decided to stay in The Premiership and move from Leicester to West Brom."
