Three on trial with Latics

OLDHAM ATHLETIC boss Iain Dowie is running the rule over a trio of trialists as he seeks to strengthen his squad.

Dowie has handed Australian duo Tom Pondeljak (pictured) and Royce Brownlee, along with Ajax youngster Darl Douglas, the chance to impress.

Pondeljak currently plays for National Soccer League champions Olympic Sharks and made his international debut for the SocceRoos earlier this month.

The 26-year-old right-sided midfielder has a keen eye for goal and will spend a week at Boundary Park.

His compatriot Brownlee is with the Second Division outfit for a similar spell, although he did play for The Latics' reserves at the weekend.

Brownlee chipped in with the goal as Oldham were beaten 2-1 by their Middlesbrough counterparts.

Latics manager Dowie is hoping he can put winger Douglas through his paces in a friendly this week.

The 22-year-old Surinamese-born flyer spent last season on loan at Haarlem but has yet to make the breakthrough at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Dowie told the club's official website: "He's got flair and can go past people, we'll see how he does. He's here for a week so hopefully we can have a look at him in a couple of games."
