Baker believes in current crop

Crewe assistant boss Neil Baker says the current squad can do well in League One.

Crewe Alexandra assistant manager Neil Baker is hopeful the club's current squad will have the ability to do well in League One.

The club were relegated from The Championship after a long struggle at the bottom of the table and have already begun preparing for life in the division below.

Although they are likely to lose some players, Baker is confident what is left will be enough to give them a chance of bouncing straight back to The Championship.

"We'd like to keep this side together, for obvious reasons," said Baker on the club's official website.

"That won't happen, because a number are out of contract, but hopefully we will lose as few players as possible and then the new recruits we bring in have got to be good signings."

"All four lads that came in in January (Jon Otsemobor, Madjid Bougherra (pictured), Gareth Taylor and Tony Grant) have been good additions.

"Bougherra is on loan and we have been working for a while to make that permanent, but obviously it hasn't happened yet and we don't know whether it will.

"We are finding that one difficult because some other clubs will be showing interest in him and he'll want to play as high as he can.

"But with Gareth and Tony things might be different. We have only signed Tony until the end of the season, but I feel he would be a good signing because he has done well for us.

"The same could be said of Gareth as well, but I don't think it would be a surprise if he was playing here next year."
