Cobblers look at Robinson

Northampton Town have handed a trial to former Oxford United man Matthew Robinson.

Northampton Town have handed a trial to former Oxford United defender Matthew Robinson.

The former Southampton, Portsmouth and Reading player appeared in the League One club's reserves that defeated their counterparts from Norwich City 3-0 on Wednesday.

Robinson has been looking for a new club after being one of eight players to be axed by The U's following their relegation into the Nationwide Conference last term.

The defender had an unsuccessful trial with League One rivals Bradford City this summer, while Gillingham were also mentioned with an interest in the 31-year-old.

Robinson will hope his run-out with The Cobblers earns him the chance to sign on at The Sixfields Stadium.
