A game played in terrible conditions saw the visitors take an early lead through Eifion Williams before having Micky Barron sent off.
Bournemouth missed the resultant penalty, but showed great determination and Wade Elliott atoned for his earlier spot kick miss by slotting home the equaliser.
Crowd favourite Steve Fletcher (pictured) was introduced as a second-half substitute and his presence forced Hartlepool`s Tommy Widdrington to turn the ball into his own net with 10 minutes remaining to snatch the win.
Bournemouth got off to a terrible start when Marcus Browning misdirected a back header that only found Williams and he scooped his shot into the net via the far post.
The Cherries went straight up the other end and won a penalty when Barron committed a silly foul on James Hayter.
He was dismissed but Anthony Williams saved Elliott`s poor penalty.
Bournemouth mounted attack after attack and Elliott atoned for his earlier miss by slamming home from close range.
Anthony Williams kept Bournemouth at bay with a string of fine saves, but he could do nothing about the winner as Fletcher closed in and forced a wild clearance that hit Widdrington and flew into the net.
Hartlepool stay top of the table despite the loss, but are just a single point clear of Bournemouth.
